Frequently asked Questions

DJ Access and Set Up Times

Q.  When will our DJ need access and how much time does it takes to set up the equipment.?

A.  A KB professional DJ is always dressed and set up before guests arrive at an event.  It is specified in each contract that the DJ is provided 1-3 hours prior to quest arrival depending on the complexity of the entertainment package.  Many factors can affect set up time including the distance and ease to access of the set up area as well as the time it takes to set up light trusses, type of audio equipment,  music video or DVD projection services if specified.  The set up period allows our staff to get equipment loaded into the facility and set up without disturbing quests and clients with sound, light and equipment checks, and tape-down of wiring. This also allows the DJ to be dressed and playing background music as guests arrive.  Bonus: There is no charge for cocktail music in most all packages except Sweet Music.

Areas of Iowa Covered

Q. How far will KB Dee Jay Service Inc. travel to perform at my event?

A. The typical venue is in Central Iowa and within a 50 mile radius such as the Des Moines Metro, Pella, Oskaloosa, Chariton, Indianola. However, as a mobile company we perform all of Iowa, and surrounding states.  We have been contracted to perform in Davenport, Waterloo, Iowa City Omaha, Nebraska, St. Louis, Missouri, Rock Island, Illinois, St Paul Minnasota, and near Pittsburg Pennsylvania.  Mileage is free up to 100 miles round trip (except for the Sweet Music Package). Beyond 100 miles the travel fee is only a dollar per mile with overnight accommodations for long distance venues. Map Quest is used to determine mileage.

Deposits

Q.   Is my deposit deducted from my contract balance or is it a retainer fee only?

A.   Your deposit is deducted from your contract fee.

Video Taping

Q.   Is there anything different regarding the venue when the client requests video taping in VHS or DVD?

A.  Yes. The quality of room light must be considered. Any videographer will advise you that “a room with medium even light produces a better quality video”. Very dark rooms produce inconsistent results despite our video cameras that have auxiliary lights.  Reception rooms with large picture windows lacking window treatments to adjust direct sunlight can reduce video quality. Full sunlight streaming in windows behind subjects being filmed can cause back lighting. Back light causes the subject to show up dark and facial expressions may be difficult to see.

Outdoor Events

Q.   Are outdoor events any different than indoor events?

A.  Yes the logistical differences are very different for outdoor events. KB can accommodate both indoor and outdoor events.  KB is obligated by law to comply with the Occupational and Safety Hazardous Act (OSHA) these laws are very specific and designed to protect you, your guests and KB employees from the hazards common to outdoor venues.  All outdoor venues must provide an overhead cover/shade that is waterproof. DJ underfoot set up area must consist of concrete or wood that is moisture proof to prevent shock hazards. Dance flooring must be separate from DJ flooring to prevent vibration which poses risk for falling equipment.  In case of rain storms or adverse weather conditions the client must designate a contingency plan or secondary venue where DJs can move the reception dance and their equipment in the case of a weather advisory, storm or tornado warnings.

A suitable electrical source is required within 20 feet of the main DJ electronics board. Each foot farther from the electric source weakens the electric voltage available for proper running of equipment. ( i.e. the  use of multiple extension cords shared with other yard lighting and fans is an example of a non suitable electricity source. In hot weather the typical 110 household currents are inadequate to service the kitchen appliances, multiple electric fans, the home air conditioner and strings of back yard decorative lights in addition the electrical power required to a full DJ set up.  KB reserves to opportunity to view and approve the outdoor venue set up prior to event date. If you have any questions regarding your venue please call the KB free toll line and talk with our staff. We would be glad to accommodate you in any way we can so that you have a safe and wonderful event.

Reception Video Services

Q.   If I purchase a video package does the video include interviewing guests

during the meal or refreshments?

A.   Guest interview is entirely the choice of the client. Every reception is fully customized as to the activities you would like to include in your video.  Regarding interview at individual tables, there are venues where tables are placed so close that it could be difficult or impossible for the videographer to work around individual tables and gain access to each guest. A solution for tight table spacing would be to video tape the whole table at once from the best access point. Audio can be reduced when the videographer is prevented from getting close enough to guests. Another solution is a group wave. Some brides and grooms prefer a technique called long views of the tables and  the individual interviews for the wedding table, special reserved tables or immediate family tables.

Cancellations

Q.   Is there a chance that KB Dee Jays will cancel or not show up at my event or wedding reception.

A.  Rest Assured; KB Dee Jays has never cancelled a contract. We receive many calls from clients and anxious brides and grooms with stories about their DJ verbally agreeing to perform at their reception then calling saying he/she must  to cancel due to an over booking or some such excuse. You are guaranteed to a reliable service backed up by a legal written contract . KB keeps staff on call for DJ staff emergencies.  KB is a member in excellent standing with the Iowa Better Business Bureau.

KB Staff Quality

Q.    I have been to wedding where the DJ is intoxicated or runs outside for multiple smoke breaks. What can I expect from KB DJs?

A.    As professionals, KB dee jays never smoke or use alcohol at events. KB staff always are attired with regard to your choice on your event planner.  KB clients have a choice of full tuxedo, suit & tie, dressy casual to special attire for themed events such as tropical or holidays. Each employee completes a six month certified DJ, master of ceremony and interactive dance instruction program prior to solo performances.

Wedding, Music and Entertainment Terminology

  • Venue – Place where reception will be held.

  • Client – Customer or person who signs service contract and is responsible for payment.

  • Interactive Staff and Dance instruction - All KB staff are provided basic Ballroom and line dance instruction and how to keep your event exciting. Each contract allows for customized detailing on the amount of interactive dancing you require.

  • Acoustics - Venues with divided rooms for dining, dancing and the refreshment bar may pose problems for sound reproduction. KB works with each client to resolve challenging room set ups and work closely with clients and view venues prior to performance.

  • Light Shows - KB has a variety of different types of light shows most all of which are computerized and state of the art.

  • Fog and Bubbles - While these special effects were a standard part of the DJs set up during the 80’s and 90’s most venues now prohibit the use of fog due to guest respiratory concerns and modern fire alarm complications. Bubbles can be used safely at some outdoor venues if the clients specifically requests bubbles and wave KB’s responsibility of falls due to slick bubble residue.

  • Refunds - KB is one of the only DJ services in Iowa that provides some type of compensation should a client need to cancel services. While the deposit is not refundable, a credit will remain with the contracted client for use of any other type of event within one year of the original contract. Should the client cancel within 30 days of the event date, one half of the contract price remains payable on the final payment due date. Again KB will keep a credit on file for that contracted client to use the amount paid for a same or different event within one year of the original contract date.

  • Consultations - no cost - one to one consultations are provided for each contracted event so that music and details of your party can be customized to your exact requirements.

  • Music Customization and dance music - KB has an extensive library of all types of party and dance music for you to choose from.  If we don’t have the music you require we’ll get that music for you for special dedications and spot light songs. KB reserves the right to limit music with x-rated or explicit lyrics.

  • Accreditation – Many DJ advertise membership in professional DJ Organizations. As flashy as these titles might imply, most of these organizations are programs to provide credit cards, personal health insurance that benefits the DJ and in no way reflects the quality of the service or the experience or skills of the individual company or DJ. Check out your DJ’s association online and you will see the truth.  When a DJ claims to be bonded and insured or licensed this can be very misleading as the State of Iowa does not provide examinations or licenses for mobile Disc Jockeys.

  • KB is the only DJ service in Iowa that belongs to the Better Business Bureau which measures consumer trust in a service as a result of the companies history of providing a quality product or service.  Please feel free to check our status with the BBB of Greater Iowa on line or by phone.
